Let Your Kids Vacation with a Little Creative Drama
Hartford Children’s Theatre Offers February and April Vacation Programs

(Hartford, Conn. – January 2008) – Not sure what to do with the kids during school vacation? You might consider added some creative drama to their schedule. Hartford Children’s Theatre is offering three drama school sessions during February and April school vacations.

Vacation classes — open to students in grades K through 8 — focus on developing performance pieces inspired by award-winning children’s books that explore issues of tolerance.

Classes are offered Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in three sessions:

  • Session 1: February 18-22
  • Session 2: April 14-18
  • Session 3: April 21-25

The February session (Feb. 18-22) will feature theatre immersion using the following children’s books:

  • Rap a Tap Tap: Here's Bojangles -Think of That, written and illustrated by Diane and Leo Dillon
  • Freedom River by Doreen Rappaport, illustrated by Bryan Collier
  • Brothers in Hope: The Story of the Lost Boys of Sudan, by Mary Williams, illustrated by R. Gregory Christie

The first April session (April 14-18) will feature theatre immersion using the following children’s books:

  • The Bat Boy and His Violin, by Gavin Curtis, illustrated by E.B. Lewis
  • In Daddy's Arms I Am Tall: African Americans Celebrating Fathers, by Alan Schroeder, illustrated by Javaka Steptoe
  • Jimi & Me, by Jaime Adoff

The second April session (April 21-25) will feature theatre immersion using the following children’s books:

  • Ellington Was Not a Street by Nzotake Shange and Kadir Nelson
  • I See the Rhythm by Toyomi Igus, illustrated by Michele Wood
  • Days of Jubilee: The End of Slavery in the United States, by Patricia C. and Frederick L. McKissack, illustrated by Diane and Leo Dillon

“Our vacation programs give students a chance to disconnect from their typical school days, have fun with other kids their age and make books come alive in new way. It’s an ideal way to spend a break from school,” said Nora Matthews, HCT’s interim program director. “Through all of our classes at the children’s theatre we help children build self-esteem, creativity and confidence. It is amazing and extremely fulfilling to watch the progression of each child who comes to our classes.

All classes are held on Hartford Children’s Theatre’s campus, located across the street from the Mark Twain House on Farmington Avenue in Hartford.

Tuition is $325 per session with early drop off and late pick-up available for a small fee. There is a non-refundable $15 registration fee per family. For additional registration details, request a brochure by calling 860-249-7970 or visit www.hartfordchildrenstheatre.org. The mission of Hartford Children’s Theatre is to enrich the lives of the children of Greater Hartford by providing access and exposure to high quality theatre for young audiences and related educational opportunities.
